For the Working Professional
When I started taking care of my emotional and mental health I had to think of things I could do while I was at work as well. It takes up 8 hours or more of my day so it was super important I keep that in mind. While all of these self care tips aren’t work specific you can apply them at work depending on your work environment.
- Eating light while away from home. My day starts at 6 am everyday. I eat some toast with cream cheese and maybe an apple if I can help it. It keeps me fueled long enough to make it to my break to eat a bit more to keep me going. I also make sure that whatever I take with me for lunch can provide the same level of fuel.
- Taking a moment to stretch a bit. I am mobile enough at work that it’s not unusual to bend or lift with the potential to get hurt. I also have a job that keeps me standing with minimal movement for an extended bit of time. Stretching breaks me of the monotonous repetition and keep s me alert.
- Leave the walls. When the weather outside isn’t too hot or the sun is out and shining, I go experience it. The hardest part is doing it. The sun, the warmth and even the breeze add just a enough of a change that it helps lift my mood.
- Clean. When my brain is jacked up, at times it’s because my surroundings are cluttered. This doesn’t mean that I have the time or energy to clean an entire house. It means I can clean a bathroom, a fridge or my purse. It gives me the ability to de-clutter my brain a bit.
- Sleep. When all else fails and my day has been too much, I sleep. If you can’t sleep in the middle of the day, I.e while kids are at school, going to bed early. I can’t go to bed every night at the same time but I do try to get a certain amount of sleep to help keep my mind level. During the day, take a minute or two to just close your eyes for a bit. Focus on your breathing and keeping all outer noise dulled.
When I started trying to do things for myself I just started. I didn’t look into suggested way to start and that was a waste. When I started looking into things that could help I found this article by Psychology Today. I realized the things I had established for myself were things people were already suggesting. This list is just how I’ve applied it to my life. Hopefully you found this useful. If so, share it with a homie who may need it.
